Akureyri is the main town for the area, and the designated winter sports centre of Iceland. Just 45 minutes flight and 5 hours drive from Reykjavik, Akureyri is easily accessible and well developed. It offers some of the best ski runs in Iceland aside a host of other activities, such as horse riding and ice fishing.
An hour further up the road from Akureyri is Lake Mývatn, an area of striking natural beauty. Intriguing lava sculptures rise out of this incredible lake (over 36km square) like a ghostly apparition, and geothermal landscapes stained the colours of the rainbow, stretch for miles.
In contrast, Jökulsárgljúfur National Park to the east of Akureyri, is home to a mighty canyon where you will find Dettifoss, Europe´s most powerful waterfall. This is the place for the best chance of seeing nature’s most spectacular light display, the Aurora Borealis or The Northern Lights.
Travel from Akureyri to the town of Húsavík, Europe’s main whale watching centre, and you are sure to see a whale. Further North East to Skagafjörður district, you can go river rafting on mighty glacial rivers which run down from the highlands.
Also in the north of Iceland, Eyjafjordur is the longest fjord in Iceland. Surrounded by spectacular mountains over 1,000m high, it provides shelter and a better climate for vegetation and crops. It is also one of the best spots from which to see the midnight sun.
