Lake Silfra
Silfra is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets. Situated in the heart of Thingvellir National Park, the site of the world’s oldest parliament and a UNESCO world heritage site, the Silfra is an otherworldly scene located directly on top of the rift between the continents of America and Europe.
Lake Silfra is particularly fertile and rich in vegetation, despite the very cold temperatures. 150 types of plants and 50 kinds of invertebrates have been found in Lake Silfra, as well as 3 of Iceland’s 5 species of freshwater fish: brown trout, Arctic charr and the three-spine stickleback. It's said that these fish became isolated in the lake in the wake of the last ice age and over a period of 10,000 years have adapted themselves to the lake’s habitat.
Take a day trip and explore 3 sites the Silfra Lagoon, the Cathedral and the Silfra Hall, in near perfect visibility.
