On day one we go to Landmannalaugar, on the way we travel through Þjórsárdalur valley, stopping at Hjalparfoss, waterfall and Þjóðveldisbær viking house. From there, we drive through beautiful mountains and by the explosion crater Ljótipollur, before reaching Landmannalaugar. At Landmannalaugar, you relax and bathe in the warm natural pond next to a lava field. Then we continue our drive through Dómadalur, where we can see the famous and active Mount Hekla, volcano, before driving through fertile farmlands of the south to the hotel.
On day two we start our journey by visiting Þorsmork,a beautiful nature reserve situated between three glaciers. Large vehicles, like our 4x4 trucks, are needed to reach this unique place.
On the way to Þórsmörk we drive through rugged roads and cross through large rivers to reach the magnificent Þórsmörk valley, which offers a unique composition of glaciers, rocks, and greenery. On the way we stop at a glacial lagoon by Gígjökull glacier. Upon your request, we may hike some of the many trails in the park and explore Stakkholtsgjá or Valahnjúk. After Þorsmork we explore the black sand on the south coast, we will see the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss, and Skogafoss, and the great cliffs of Dyrholaey, and Reynisdrangar.
On day three we will start by visiting Laki, where the second largest basaltic fissure eruption occurred in historic time (after the ~935 eruption of nearby Eldgja). The eruption began on June 8, 1783 and lasted eight months. An estimated 14.731 cubic km of basalt was erupted and covered an area of 565 square km. Then we will visit the national park Skaftafell, located south of the Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in Europe and stop by Jokulsarlon, a Breidurmerkursandi where you see large icebergs floating in the lagoon that have broken of the glacier. Then we will continue east and reach Hofn, in time to make the evening flight back to Reykjavik.
